Mutton Kulambu or Mutton Kuzhambu is a popular mutton curry from Tamil Nadu and the Chettinad region. This simple mutton curry recipe is also made in a pressure cooker and it tastes great with rice.

This onion-tomato base curry is flavored with a delicious paste made using white poppy seeds, fennel seeds, cashew nuts and fresh coconut. It is also a very good combination for rice, roti, dosa and idly.

Here is a spicy village-style Mutton Kulambu (Mutton Kuzhambu) that is popular in the Chettinad region of India. This easy-to-make mutton curry is a bomb combination of coconut and poppy seeds which gives this curry a distinct flavor that is just too delicious.

Kulambu or kuzhambu is a thin curry with a sour touch by adding tomatoes to them. Mutton Kulambu is perfectly cooked well, so that the masala flavors get infused into the mutton, making it perfect to make for your special South Indian meal.

This is usually prepared at Tamil homes every Sunday afternoons and you can smell the aroma of Mutton Kulambu when you enter most of the houses. Idli Mutton Kuzhambu is a must for all non-veg lovers in many household for Diwali breakfast.

This Mutton Kuzhambu tastes best with idly, rice, chapathi etc. We usually make this kulambu on Saturday evenings along with parotta or chapathi and it’s really a finger licking dish.

You can simply replace mutton by chicken pieces and the curry will still tastes divine. Addition of boiled and peeled potatoes make this recipe more interesting and also gives a thick consistency to the gravy.

    Directions

    Always buy fresh and tender raw meat which helps in speeding up the cooking process of the mutton. Also if poppy seeds are not available you can simply omit it.

    Step1
    Mutton Kulambu

    Take one kg of cleaned, washed mutton pieces into the pressure pan. Always use mutton with the bone as bone is where all the flavor is. The bone broth is very healthy too.

    To this, add salt, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp red chili powder, 1tsp coriander powder.

    Mix well until everything is well combined. Drizzle some water, cover the lid and pressure cook the mutton till done. Once the pressure releases, remove the mutton pieces from the cooker.

    Meanwhile, for the onion tomato base, chop 3 medium sized onions and 2 medium tomatoes.

    Also, crush garlic, ginger, green chilies, some curry leaves and keep them aside.

    Take a pan and add 3tbsp of oil. When the oil is hot, add in some whole spices and roast for few seconds. Add the chopped onions and give a quick stir.

    Then add crushed green chilies and curry leaves and continue sautéing. When onions turns pink, add crushed ginger and garlic. Cook until onions turn soft. Keep stirring them at regular intervals, this will take some 4-5 mins.

    Now, add chopped tomatoes, little salt and cook for 2-3 mins. Cover the pan and cook for 5 mins or until the oil separates.

    Add 1 tsp chili powder , 1/2 tsp turmeric powder , 1 tsp coriander powder and 1 tsp garam masala, stir for another min.

    Make a freshly ground paste which is made using, grated coconut, cashew nuts, poppy seeds and fennel seeds. Blend them all into a fine paste by adding some water and set them aside. Add in the ground masala paste, add 1/2 cup water to the empty blender jar and wash off all the left over masala paste and add it back to the pan. Sauté for 4-5 mins, until the raw smell of masala is gone.

    Add in 2 cups of water and allow it to boil. Cover the pan and cook for around 5 mins. Add curd and mix well. Cover and cook in low flame for another 3-4 mins.

    Finally add the mutton and mix well. Add water as per your desired consistency and again mix well.

    Take 2 potatoes, cut into cubes and cook them in the mutton stock. Add the cooked potatoes and simmer for 5 mins on low flame. Also check for salt.

    Flavor packed mutton curry is ready to be served, garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

    Serve this mouthwatering mutton curry with hot steamed rice or with Idlies.
